Best Water for Acid Reflux (GERD)

No bottled water treats acid reflux or GERD. Plain water is a sensible drink choice, and some people find still, higher-pH water easier on their symptoms than sparkling or acidic drinks. Below: what the evidence does and doesn't show, how to choose a water, and higher-pH still waters compared.

Medical disclaimer: This article is for general information only and is not medical, pediatric or nutrition advice. Always follow your pediatrician's guidance on water for infants, formula preparation and any water choices related to a medical condition. For infants under 6 months, consult a healthcare provider before switching water sources.

Does alkaline water help acid reflux?

The evidence is limited. Alkaline water has been studied mainly in small laboratory experiments, not in large clinical trials, so it isn't an established treatment for GERD. Stomach acid is far stronger than any drinking water, and a glass of alkaline water doesn't change it for long.

That said, some people prefer it, and a still, higher-pH water is a reasonable swap for acidic drinks like soda or juice if that's what you find easier. Treat it as a drink preference, not medicine, and keep following your doctor's advice.

Still vs sparkling water for reflux

Carbonation makes water more acidic (sparkling waters often test around pH 5–6) and the bubbles can cause bloating and belching, which some people find makes reflux feel worse. If that's you, choose still water. Compare acidity by brand in our sparkling water pH comparison.

    What to look for

    • Still, not sparkling if bubbles bother you.
    • Neutral to mildly alkaline (around pH 7–8.5) is plenty; very high pH isn't proven to add benefit.
    • Low sodium if you're also watching salt; see our low-sodium bottled water guide.
    • Room temperature or cool water, sipped rather than gulped, is often easier with reflux.

A lower-cost alternative to bottled alkaline water

If you drink a lot of it, a filter with a remineralizing or alkaline stage, or a countertop water ionizer, costs less over time than cases of bottled alkaline water. Compare options in our water filters and water appliances guides.

    When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you have heartburn more than twice a week, symptoms that keep coming back despite changes, trouble or pain swallowing, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss. Water choice is not a substitute for diagnosis and treatment.

    Frequently asked questions

Is alkaline water good for acid reflux?

There's no strong clinical evidence that alkaline water treats acid reflux or GERD; most research is small and laboratory-based. Some people find still, mildly alkaline water easier than acidic drinks, which makes it a reasonable drink choice, but not a treatment. Follow your doctor's advice.

Is sparkling water bad for acid reflux?

It can be for some people. Carbonation makes water more acidic, often around pH 5 to 6, and the bubbles can cause bloating and belching that make reflux feel worse. If you notice symptoms after sparkling water, switch to still water and see whether it helps.

What pH water is best for GERD?

There's no proven ideal pH. Neutral to mildly alkaline still water, around pH 7 to 8.5, is a sensible everyday choice. Very high-pH waters such as Essentia at about 9.5 aren't shown to work better, so choose based on taste, sodium and price.
